Project Summary: The Clemant State Forest consists of a rare Melaleuca viridiflora remnant forest that is important habitat to a number of threatened species most notably the Mahogany Glider.This project will raise awareness of the value of the Clemant habitat in the local community and amongst visitors to the area that utilise the forest recreationally. The main avenue will be through an educational program including the engagement of Rollingstone State School, which is interested in becoming a Reef Guardian School. Completed actions and events: • Work plan prepared by WetlandCare Australia (WCA) (Terri Buono) • Relevant project participants contacted and advised of the project • Community education day tentatively arranged for April 14 (postponed) • WCA withdraw from the project due to staff funding issues • Conservation Volunteers Australia will take over from WCA and complete components of the project • Planning completed by WCA (Terri Buono) • WCA presence in Townsville scaled down due to budget constraints causing WCA to withdraw from the project. CVA asked to take over the project - March 2012 • Handover report and resources received from WCA including - April 2012; o A Guide to Native Frog Monitoring (Townsville) o Townsville Frog ID Cheat Sheet • CVA coordinated Clemant/Toomulla Wetland Day Community Day - 15 July 2012 o 8 volunteers/community members from Townsville, o 6 local community members from Toomulla, o 8 international volunteers and about 20 people from the camp ground come over to look at the information on display and talk about the area, o Conducted 2 x 4WD tours -16 people showing them around Clements Wetlands, o Tree giveaways and general information on wetlands and children’s activities, o BBQ for participants, o There was coverage in the weekend paper “What’s on this weekend” (see Creekwatch sub project activities). • Final report received – 7 August 2012 (email) |
