Increasing Community Engagement in Townsville Coastal Catchments for Biodiversity Project |
Short Title: Horseshoe Bay Habitat |
Horseshoe Bay Catchment and Habitat Management |
Location: Horseshoe Bay catchments |
Organisation: Creek to Coral |
Project Summary: Horseshoe
Bay features a narrow coastal zone that supports a series of well-defined
habitats, ecosystems and wetlands of high quality that is unique to the Great
Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. In a 2km north / south traverse to the bay,
the array of geomorphological formations and supported habitats represents a
more traditional 20 - 30km transect of the seasonally arid coastal zones of
North Queensland.
The Horseshoe Bay Coastal Wetlands are unique to the bioregion being part of a largely piedmont sand deposit eroded off granitic hills on an island (Magnetic Island). There are also some very distinctive beach ridges and vegetated older hind dunes in Horseshoe Bay. Colluvium and alluvium deposits extend behind the beach ridges back to steep hill slopes. The Horseshoe Bay coastal wetland agglomeration is under pressure from accelerated development and associated changes to the wetland catchment area. It is time to develop a catchment strategy that will serve to maintain the natural values of Horseshoe Bay while enabling the protection and management of the wetlands that are such an important natural feature of the catchment. |
