Short Title: Northern Beaches


Northern Beaches Coastal Habitat Management


Location: Northern Beaches (Bushland Beach to Balgal)


Organisation: Townsville City Council


Project Summary:

A survey was carried out by partner organisations (Greening Australia, Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. and Townsville City Council) after reports of an outbreak of weeds along the foreshore of Townsville's Northern Beaches.


Proposed Activities:

- Survey of weed type and distribution

- Weed control program

- Community awareness and involvement activities


Completed actions and events:

Stage 1

•    Weed survey – 28 and 29 June 2011

•    Weed survey and mapping (completed) – August 2011

•    Discussed with Byron for GAWT to take over the project as CDTLI do not wish to proceed with weed control proposal - November 2011

•    Meeting held with Simon Igloi, Ray Davis, Byron Kearns and Kent Worsley. Decided that the funding would be best spent on community education activities including weed identification workshops etc - 9 February 2012

Stage 2

Preparation of the (Northern Beaches) Townsville Coastal Habitat Management Guide

•    Framework for the Coastal Habitat Management Guide
o    Coastal conditions and processes (difference from ‘normal’ works)
o    Key management concepts e.g. strand vegetation and erosion
o    Access and erosion control
o    Weed identification and control
o    Revegetation methods and case studies TCC/Adam King and various coastal communities (e.g. Toomulla, Cungulla)
o    Plants for rehabilitation and identification section (20 or so key plants for revegetation)
