A combined Townsville Council, State Government, Commonwealth and community based initiative to maintain and enhance our waterways in the coastal dry tropics. |
Increasing Community Engagement in Townsville Coastal Catchments for Biodiversity Project |
Short Title: Petersen Creek |
Petersen Creek Restoration |
Location: Petersen Creek Magnetic Island |
Organisation: Geoffrey Bay Coastcare |
Project Summary: Petersen Creek flows through Magnetic Island residential areas of Arcadia into Geoffrey Bay. Geoffrey Bay supports seagrass beds and coral reef and is a Marine National Park. Downstream from Hayles Avenue, most of Petersen Creek is on public land. The creek vegetation is increasingly dominated by environmental weeds. The project will engage the community in replacement of environmental weeds with native vegetation. This will improve habitat, corridors, bank stability, beach sand supply and water quality in the GBR World Heritage Area. |
