Petersen Creek Restoration

Location: Petersen Creek Magnetic Island

Project Summary:

Petersen Creek flows through Magnetic Island residential areas of Arcadia into Geoffrey Bay. Geoffrey Bay supports seagrass beds and coral reef and is a Marine National Park. Downstream from Hayles Avenue, most of Petersen Creek is on public land. The creek vegetation is increasingly dominated by environmental weeds. The project will engage the community in replacement of environmental weeds with native vegetation. This will improve habitat, corridors, bank stability, beach sand supply and water quality in the GBR World Heritage Area.

•    Prepare weed management and revegetation plan – February/March 2012
•    Local native plant propagation – March/June 2012
•    Identification of native plants and weeds – March 2012
•    Prepare project information sheet and letterbox drop to local residents – July 2012
•    *Weed management including cut stump and shredding of materials for on-site mulching– July/August 2012
•    Community revegetation (10 trees) – July 2012
•    Revegetation maintenance including follow up weed control and watering – July/ September 2012
•    Community tree planting, weeding* and infill revegetation amongst native vegetation including at Alma Bay creek (50 trees) - October 2012
•    Planting maintenance e.g. watering – October/December 2012
•    Planning for future activities – January 2013
•    Progress report received - 12 August 2012
•    Project variation approved for Alma Bay creek works - 24 September 2012

*Weed control included: Yellow oleander (Cascabela thevetia was Thevetia peruviana WWDT p.84), Japanese Sunflower, Mother-in-law Tongue, Leucaena, Sisal Hemp, Singapore Daisy, triffids, Poinciana, Tamarind and Coral Vine.
